Considered as an alternative to petroleum-based candles, soy wax candles are a more sustainable and cost-effective product, providing the environmentally-conscious consumer with a safer and healthier product for the home, as well as for the planet.
Why not use petroleum based candles?
Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum. Petroleum is drilled from the earth, rather than farmed naturally as a renewable energy. Paraffin wax candles raise the issue of toxicity; the burning of the wax is know to release at least eleven known toxins, two of which are known carcinogens (toluene and benzene.) In addition to health concerns, the smoke emitted from paraffin candles is what leaves visibly evident soot stains on home interiors and furniture. Most paraffin wax candles loose their scent approximately one hour after being lit, which is a major drawback to candles intended to function as aromatherapy. Paraffin wax burns at a higher temperature than soy wax and consequently burns much faster (at twice the rate,) which makes paraffin wax candles less cost-effective.
Soy Farming
The environmental impact of the soybean industry is massive. By growing three billion bushels a year the soy industry provides the basis of
a wide variety of sustainable resources which are eco-safe and replenishable year
after year. Soy farming is helping to meet the high energy demands of the country more naturally
and more safely. By switching to soybean products and utilizing
soy based fuels like biodiesel, we reduce our reliance on petroleum farming and
petroleum products, which ultimately reduces the spread of particle emissions linked to cancer.
The Benefits of Soy Candles
In addition to the natural harvesting of soy wax (which
supports farming in a major way,) the candles produce non-toxic smoke, which
not only means no more soot stains on walls and furniture, but cleaner air and cleaner breathing.
Soy candles burn cooler and subsequently slower than petroleum-based candles, which increases their 'scent throw', meaning their fragrance fills the room with a stronger and longer lasting scent. This makes them better for aromatherapy as the scent emitted by burning essential oils has a greater potency and the candles aren't releasing upsetting toxins into the air.
When using candles for aromatherapy, by process of the 'inhalation method' the essential oil released into the air reaches the roof of the nose where the aroma is carried by olfactory receptors to the limbic system (the part of the brain which is connected with instinct, mood and emotion.) As an affect, aromatherapy has the remarkable ability to improve skin tone, regulate hormones, relax muscles, improve sleep, improve blood circulation, relieve menstrual cramps, reduce tension related headaches, relieve lung congestion, boost the immune system and strengthen the bodies ability to resist disease and infection.
Because soy candles burn cooler than petroleum-based candles the wax is cooler, making them less likely to harm children if spilled. Soy wax is also water soluble and any wax stains are easily washed out by soap and water. The lower melting point of soy candles means they melt easily and are prone to loosing their structure in hot weather. However, considering that most soy candles are formed in jars, not only does this prevent any issue of excessive melting, but it provides increased safety for you and your family.
